Come for the style, stay for the taste
Everyone heads out to fashion weeks for a dose of style
but in Mumbai, the film stars pack much more masala!
Let's face the facts. No one goes to Mumbai for fashion epiphanies and no one shows at HDIL India Couture Week to prove their sartorial superiority. This particular fashion week - though the many in India are now increasingly being overshadowed by the presence of film stars - is held simply and solely for designers to appeal to their Mumbai buyers and press through… you guessed it right…Bollywood. And having attended two, I can safely say that the Mumbai media isn't interested in much more.
Once Aishwarya Rai had walked out for Manish Malhotra, nothing else mattered. The television ran and re-ran her brief backstage interview on Kouture With Karan (Johar is commissioned to do this especially for a TV channel that has exclusive rights to backstage coverage at HDIL India Fashion Week). Who better set for the task: he is style savvy, articulate and has more insight to the celebrities than anyone else. But the flip side is that Monisha Jaising, who held the second slot that same evening, was completely sidelined. It was late, the channels had gotten their adrenalin rush and except for a few die-hard and devoted journalists, not many people stuck around. The same routine followed everyday,
